The Amazing Race 13: Premieres Tonight

September 28, 2008 06:33:00 by Britteny_Elrick

Eleven teams were brought via classic car to the Los Angeles Coliseum to begin a cut throat race with one million dollars up for grabs.  Groups of two from various backgrounds will compete in the first of eleven legs of the Amazing Race, in which the last team to arrive at each pit stop will be eliminated.  Find out who will be the first to go…

Their first clue was at the top of the stairs in the coliseum - to take a flight to Salvador, Brazil.  All the contestants jumped in their cars to race to LAX.  Nick and Starr, brother and sister, were off to a good start in first place, however, they are inexperienced travellers and got very confused at the highways.  Andrew and Dan, frat brothers, are confident in their abilities to navigate the airports as Andrew used to work at one.

A bunch of the teams discover that they are not at the correct “flagged” counter, so they race across the airport to find the flag.  Mark and Bill, best friends, are the first to board the American Airlines flight to Brazil, followed by six other teams.  Andrew and Dan and Toni and Dallas, mother and son, are the first to discover that the flight is oversold and have to board the next flight, which will be three hours behind.

Nick and Starr form a loose alliance with Ken and Tina, and refer to them as their “parents.”

Turns out the first flight was delayed one and a half hours.  Mark and Bill are still in first place, when they arrive they are to find a sandwich shop and retrieve their next clue.  They have to navigate a vendor cart through the narrow streets (without and deliver it to India, who will give them their next clue.  Ken and Tina, separated, are having a hard time as the items are falling off their cart.  Nick and Starr are in third place. Their next stop is a Brazilian military base, where they will rest and receive one of three departure times.  Terence and Sarah, newly dating, are in first place and the first to arrive at the base.  They are followed by Nick and Starr and then Mark and Bill.

The second flight just landed in Brazil and it brings Anthony and Stephanie, Andrew and Dan, Kelly and Christy, Anita and Arthur, Aja and Toni and Dallas, Marisa and Brooke.

Terrence and Sarah are newly dating and complete opposites.  Terrence is upset that Sarah is talking to the other teams and not focused on him, and also that she is concerned with people liking her.  The next morning the teams leave in three groups [9:15, 9:30, and 9:45] and have to take a taxi to go to the center of Salvador - they all struggle immensely with the language barrier.

DETOUR:  They must choose between “hard way up” or “soft way down.” In hard way up they have to climb on their hands and knees up enormous flights of stone stairs and then they will be asked a question, if they answer wrong they have to repeat.  In soft way down they have to go up to an outdoor elevator and climb down 240 feet below on a net.  Nick and Starr are currently leading and choose to do the soft way down, followed by their alliance Ken and Tina.

The pit stop is the Forte Sao Marcelo and the first to arrive are Nick and Starr [pictured below, won a trip to Belize], followed by Tina and Ken.  Mark and Bill were making their way down the net when Terence and Sarah passed them up to be the third to the pit stop.  Mark and Bill finished fourth.

Kelly and Christy and Toni and Dallas are making their way down the net, while Andrew and Dan opt to climb the stairs.  They answer the first question wrong [how many stairs were there?] and they have to repeat the task.

Kelly and Christy, recent divorcees, are the fifth team to cross the finish line, followed by Toni and Dallas, mother and son.  Arthur and Anita, hippie beekeepers, carefully make their way down the net and then find themselves in a race to the pit stop against the remaining five teams.

Andrew and Dan are in seventh place, followed by Aja and Ty, Anthony and Stephanie, Marisa and Brooke.  Arthur and Anita, hippie beekeepers,  are the last to arrive which eliminates them from the race.
