American Idol Adds A Fourth Judge

American Idol is adding a fourth permanent judge to the panel this season.

Joining Simon Cowell, Paula Abdul and Randy Jackson for the eighth season of the show this January is singer-songwriter Kara DioGuardi.

Although her name may not be familiar, she is no stranger to Idol. She has written songs for David Cook, David Archuleta, Carrie Underwood, Clay Aiken, Bo Bice, Katherine McPhee and Taylor Hicks.

Kara has also written hits for other singers besides American Idol contestants such as Britney Spears, Jonas Brothers, Gwen Stefani, Christina Aguilera, Celine Dion, Faith Hill, Paris Hilton, Avril Lavigne, Lindsay Lohan, Leona Lewis, Natasha Bedingfield, Santana, Hilary Duff, Jessica and Aslee Simpson and many other artists that made it to the top 10 in recent years.

Creator and executive producer Simon Fuller said, “We are turning the heat up on Idol this year and are thrilled to welcome Kara to the judges’ table. She is a smart, sassy lady, and one of America’s most successful songwriters.”

He is hoping that she will bring a new level of energy and excitement to the show.

The show was supposed to have a fourth judge right from the start as its British predecessor Pop Idol, Canadian Idol and current counterpart X Factor do.

Fellow executive producer Cecile Frot-Coutaz said, “We’ve seen from our international series that having a fourth judge creates a dynamic that benefits both the contestants and the viewers.”

The producers of the American show tried once before to add a fourth judge during the second season of the show. Angie Martinez, a New York DJ was slotted to be on the panel, but she quit the job after five days of  when she revealed that she never watched Idol before and didn’t feel comfortable telling someone to give up their dream.
