American Idol Results Shocker: Carly Smithson Eliminated

On the American Idol results show for the top 6 finalists, Ryan Seacrest opened the show by high fiving Randy Jackson and giving a kiss to both Paula Abdul and Simon Cowell. For the first performance of the evening, the top 6 finalists performed “All I Ask Of You,” while Andrew Lloyd Webber accompanied them on the piano.

For the Ford music video, the American Idol finalists performed “Tainted Love.” In a taped segment, President George Bush and First Lady Laura Bush praised Idol Gives Back. After the Presidential segment, Ryan Seacrest called David Cook and David Archuleta to center stage. Seacrest revealed that after the nationwide vote they were both safe.

After a Broadway video segment with Tamyra Gray and Clay Aiken, Leona Lewis performed “Bleeding Love.” After Leona’s performance, Ryan Seacrest called Syesha Mercado and Brooke White to center stage. Seacrest revealed that Brooke White was safe and Syesha Mercado was in the bottom two.

Finally, Ryan Seacrest called Jason Castro and Carly Smithson to center stage. Seacrest revealed that Jason Castro was safe and Carly Smithson was in the bottom two. Before the elimination results were announced, Carly Smithson performed “Jesus Christ Superstar” and Syesha Mercado performed “One Rock N’ Roll Too Many.”

After the performances, Ryan Seacrest said, “After thirty-eight million votes, Carly, you are leaving us tonight.” After a recap of Carly’s American Idol experience, Simon Cowell said, “I apologize for giving you a compliment last night, kiss of death. But let me tell you, Carly, you can leave with your head held high.”
