During American Idol 6, the show held a competition for songwriters.  Over 25,000 songwriters submitted songs online during American Idol 6, and twenty finalists were chosen. Over two million people voted online and helped to select the winning song of “This Is My Now.”

“This Is My Now” was written by Jeff Peabody and Scott Krippayne.  Jordin Sparks performed the song during the Idol finale, and the song was included on her self-titled, debut album.

For American Idol 7, the show is once again holding a songwriting competition.  The online submission process is already underway, but songwriters only have until March 31, 2008 to submit their songs.  There is a $10 entry fee for songwriters to submit their songs.  After the submission phase has closed, Simon Fuller and his 19 Entertainment A&R staff will select the top twenty finalists.  On April 10, 2008, the online voting phase will begin.  The winning song will be performed on the American Idol 7 finale.

“American Idol has been a vehicle for discovering so many great new artists over the years, and with the return of the American Idol Songwriting Competition, we continue our search for the best undiscovered talent in the world,” said American Idol creator Simon Fuller.

Full details, rules and restrictions for the American Idol songwriter competition are online at www.americanidol.com.
