After Ryan Seacrest introduced the top 10 American Idol 7 male semifinalists, the judges offered their feedback. Randy Jackson said, “Make sure you’re in it to win it.” Paula Abdul said, “I think it’s going to be better this week.” Simon Cowell said, “Be better.” Seacrest announced the theme of the night as “classic songs from the seventies.”
Michael Johns sang “Go Your Own Way.” Randy Jackson said, “Nice way to start it off.” Paula Abdul said, “I think it was a great way to start off the show.” Simon Cowell said, “It was by far your weakest performance of the whole competition so far for you.”
Jason Castro sang “I Just Want To Be Your Everything.” Randy Jackson said, “The vocals just weren’t that great.” Paula Abdul said, “I think you made a clever choice with the song.” Simon Cowell said, “I thought the song was horrible.”
Luke Menard sang “Killer Queen.” Randy Jackson said, “I liked you better this week than last week.” Paula Abdul said, “I am so glad that this week was a great week for you.” Simon Cowell said, “The singer of that song had charisma and personality, you didn’t.”
Robbie Carrico sang “Hot Blooded.” Randy Jackson said, “It was just ok.” Paula Abdul said, “I think that in some ways you played it a little bit safe this week.” Simon Cowell said, “Actually, I thought the vocal was ok tonight.”
Danny Noriega sang “Until You Come Back To Me.” Randy Jackson said, “On a song like this, you can maybe speed it up a little bit.” Paula Adbul said, “You can’t over think it. You’ve got to just take a deep breath, and forget about us as much as you can.” Simon Cowell said, “Last week, I thought was a disaster. This was better.”
David Hernandez sang “Papa Was A Rolling Stone.” Randy Jackson said, “Now, this is the David Hernandez that we fell in love with.” Paula Abdul said, “Your voice is so pure it pierces right through the heart.” Simon Cowell said, “In my opinion that was the best vocal of the night so far.”
Jason Yeager sang “Long Train Runnin.’” Randy Jackson said, “It was very pitchy and just kind of karaoke once again for me.” Paula Abdul said, “It’s a song that has not many notes in it that doesn’t show your vocal range.” Simon Cowell said, “The simple truth is last week was boring. This week was just awkward and ordinary.”
Chikezie sang “I Believe.” Randy Jackson said, “Chikezie is back, America.” Paula Abdul said, “It was brilliant.” Simon Cowell said, “It was a million times better than last week.”
David Cook sang “All Right Now.” Randy Jackson said, “To me, you’re our real rocker from the boys this year.” Paula Abdul said, “David, you are the real deal.” Simon Cowell said, “You don’t have a lot of charisma.”
David Archuleta sang “Imagine.” Randy Jackson said, “Dawg, that’s one of the best vocals I’ve ever heard on this show.” Paula Abdul said, “I wanted to squish you, squeeze your head off, and dangle you from my rear view mirror.” Simon Cowell said, “Right now, you’re the one to beat, and they’re nineteen very miserable contestants sitting here tonight.”
After last weeks’ performances, it looked like that Chikezie and David Hernandez wouldn’t stand a chance at making the top twelve overall. This week, they both pulled off two of the greatest one week turnarounds in Idol history. Both were in the top three performances overall. David Archuleta was the other member of the top three, but everyone probably already expected him to be there.
Who will be the next two male performers eliminated from American Idol 7? Jason Yeager will likely be one of them, but there could be an elimination shocker in whoever joins him. Even though Michael Johns has been a favorite, he had an off night and surprisingly was stuck in the dreaded opening spot.
