Eliminated American Idol Contestants Find Humor And Love In Simon Cowell’s Mean Comments

While viewers might have seen the softer side of Simon Cowell during the audition rounds, the ‘king of mean’ was back in full force for the first round of the semifinalist stage of the American Idol 7 competition.  Cowell delivered by calling one contestant’s performance grotesque and saying another contestant’s performance was like ‘Night Of The Living Dead.’”

Recently eliminated American Idol semifinalists Garrett Haley and Colton Berry both felt the sting of Simon Cowell’s sharp tongue.  After Garrett’s performance of “Breaking Up Is Hard To Do,” Cowell told Garrett that he looked like he had been shut up in his bedroom for about a month. 

However, it turns out that Garrett wasn’t offended by Cowell’s reference to his pale complexion.  During a recent conference call, Garrett explained, “When he first said that, I actually found some humor in it, because I know that I have fair skin, and I’m like…I’m happy, I’m really happy with the way I look, and I wouldn’t change the way I look just because Simon says I’m white or too white, you know.  So, it didn’t really bother me.”

Perhaps, one of Cowell’s most vicious comments of the season to date came as an obviously upset Colton Berry stood on stage.  Colton had just learned he was among the first four contestants voted off the show, and Paula Abdul had offered him some words of encouragement.  However, Simon Cowell told Colton, “I would say get a good job, and seriously enjoy singing, because I don’t think you’ll make a successful career out of it.”

When asked about Simon’s ‘get a good job’ comment, Colton surprisingly expressed his love for who Simon was.  Colton said, “You know what, Simon’s job is to be Simon Cowell.  There is no one else in the world like Simon Cowell and that’s who he’s supposed to be, so I expected him to say something like that, but I also kept in mind, and I think America kind of kept in mind when he said that comment, he did pick the top twenty-four.  Out of hundreds of thousands of people, he picked us to be the top twenty-four singers in America, so obviously we’re all going to continue on in music careers.  That’s who we are, and obviously he had a hand in putting us there.  Um, I think he was being kind of a little hypocritical on himself, but you know he’s Simon, and everyone loves him, and I love him for who he is.”
