American Idol Top Ten Get Cooking

For the American Idol top ten performance show, the theme was songs from the year that the finalists were born.  Of course, this theme meant cute baby pictures of the finalists in the background intro segments.  After the disaster that was the second Beatles night, several of the finalists rebounded this week.  Michael Johns and Kristy Lee Cook gave their best performances of the season so far, but David Cook ultimately stole the show.

Ramiele Malubay was born on September 6, 1987.  Ramiele sang Heart’s “Alone.”  Randy Jackson said, “It wasn’t the right song choice for you for me.”  Paula Abdul said, “You’re really sick.  I know that.  So, I’m hoping that you stay through and keep going, because you’re a very big talent in a little small package.”  Simon Cowell said, “I didn’t think it was as bad as Randy said.”

Jason Castro was born on March 25, 1987.  Jason sang Sting’s “Fragile.”  Randy Jackson said, “That was a very good choice of song.”  Paula Abdul said, “I think you’re staying true to who you are.”  Simon Cowell said, “I think you’ve had two bad weeks, and I think it’s time that you start taking this a little bit more seriously.”

Syesha Mercado was born on January 2, 1987.  Syesha sang “If I Were Your Woman.”  Randy Jackson said, “I think this is the best I’ve ever heard you sing, including when you auditioned.”  Paula Abdul said, “This is going to be the moment that everyone remembers, where Syesha flipped it and became the dark horse, who’s going to sail on through.”  Simon Cowell said, “It was definitely the best so far, but we’re only three in.”

Chikezie was born on September 11, 1985.  Chikezie sang “If Only For One Night.”  Randy Jackson said, “I didn’t love it for you.”  Paula Abdul said, “I think that you did a great job.”  Simon Cowell said, “I think that you sang it well.  Having said that, I thought the performance actually was very cheesy.”

Brooke White was born on June 2, 1983.  Brooke sang The Police’s “Every Breath You Take.”  Randy Jackson said, “It was just ok for me.”  Paula Abdul said, “I enjoyed this performance so much more than last week’s.”  Simon Cowell said, “If you had just stayed you on the piano, that actually would have sounded much more cool.”

Michael Johns was born on October 20, 1978.  Michael sang Queen’s “We Will Rock You/We Are The Champions.”  Randy Jackson said, “That was the best performance for me since you’ve been on this show.”  Paula Abdul said, “This was your moment, your shining moment.”  Simon Cowell said, “This is the first time with you I saw star potential.”

Carly Smithson was born on September 12, 1983.  Carly sang Bonnie Tyler’s “Total Eclipse Of The Heart.”  Randy Jackson said, “I didn’t love it.”  Paula Abdul said, “I loved what you did at the end.”  Simon Cowell said, “Carly, something didn’t quite work.”

David Archuleta was born on December 28, 1990.  David sang “You’re The Voice.”  Randy Jackson said, “It was very nice.”  Paula Abdul said, “David, you can sing the phone book, and we’d fall in love with it.”  Simon Cowell said, “I actually didn’t like the performance at all.  I thought it was actually reminiscent of a theme park performance.”

Kristy Lee Cook was born on January 18, 1984.  Kristy sang “God Bless The U.S.A.”  Randy Jackson said, “Other than some little pitchy parts in the middle, I thought it was a very nice performance from you.”  Paula Abdul said, “Very good choice for you.”  Simon Cowell said, “Kristy, your best performance by a mile, I think.”

David Cook was born on December 20, 1982.  David sang Chris Cornell’s version of “Billie Jean.”  Randy Jackson said, “I think you’re probably the most original, the most bold contestant we’ve ever had.”  Paula Abdul said, “I’m blown away.  I can’t sit down.”  Simon Cowell said, “David, that was brave.  I mean it could have either been insane or amazing, and I have to tell you, it was amazing.”

Michael Johns and Kristy Lee Cook likely sang their way to safety, and David Cook sealed his spot as the frontrunner.  Jason Castro, Brooke White, and David Archuleta will likely survive based on previous performances.  While all the others are at risk, Ramiele Malubay and Carly Smithson are probably most at risk.
